WHAT YOU CAN SPECIFY
Any opening type can be made to order: casement, sash, awning, sliding, fixed or bay. In your enquiry, name the room the window is in and describe how it should open: hinged at the side, sliding up or across, tilting out from the top, or not opening at all. If you don’t know the name of the type, describing how it moves is enough. Also say whether it should match other windows on the house.

Frame material
TIMBER · ALUMINIUM · uPVC
Timber, aluminium or uPVC. You can name the material you want, or tell us what matters most, such as a slim sightline, a painted finish or low upkeep, and leave the material open. In your enquiry, mention the frame colour or finish you have in mind and what the existing frames on the house are made of, so the new window can sit with them or deliberately stand apart.

Glazing
SINGLE · DOUBLE · ACOUSTIC · LOW-E
Single, double or acoustic glazing, and low-E glass. Describe the room behind the window rather than a product: a bedroom facing a busy road, a living area that gets strong afternoon sun, a bathroom that needs privacy. Say whether noise, heat, cold or glare is the main concern. Different openings on the same house can take different glass, so note each one separately.

Period detailing
SASHES · GLAZING BARS · MOULDINGS · HARDWARE
The details that carry a period look: timber sashes and tall proportions, glazing bars that divide the panes, mouldings and shadow lines, and traditional catches and lifts. In your enquiry, describe how the existing windows are divided (for example two panes over two), the era of the house if you know it, and which details you want kept. The glass can still be chosen separately.

Existing window (restore or replace)
CONDITION · INTENT
Tell us about the window that is there now. Note its frame material and condition, such as sound, draughty, sticking, cracked paint or soft timber, and which way you are leaning: keeping the existing window, ordering a new made-to-order window for the opening, or not yet decided. ‘Not sure yet’ is a perfectly good answer in an enquiry.

Opening sizes
WIDTH · HEIGHT · WALL DEPTH
Rough sizes are enough to start. Give the width and height of each opening, say whether you measured the opening or the existing frame, and add the wall depth if you can. List each window separately with the room it is in, so several openings in one enquiry stay clear.

Aftercare

Upkeep can be part of the specification. If you want a window that needs little attention, say so. Also mention anything that makes cleaning or access awkward, such as an upstairs opening, and how exposed the wall is to strong sun or driving rain, because frames, seals and finishes wear differently.
